Sometimes the cardboard is compressed just a little too much.

I found one of the original cardboard "book" packages in Hastings last night. I'm not really sure if it's worth the $36 they were asking though? If I knew it was going to increase in value, I might grab it.

They also had one of the subsequent "HD Keep Case" editions right next to it on the shelf...quite a difference in size and thickness.

Mine came for B&N. Just a snap case. Don't really care, because I wanted the movie, but did that book addition have anything extra with it?

Just watched my new Blu-Ray of Battle Royale. Haven't watched the film in ages! Now, I have read Hunger Games and really loved it, but after re-watching BR, there is no doubt in my mind that the author stole from it. Yet, the beyotch says she's never heard of the film. That's what bugs me most. Not only is the premise about sending a bunch of teens out to fight to the death, but there are way too many similarities. They get random bags with weapons in them, the death toll is announced everyday for all to hear. There are danger zones that get activated on the island. This was like an outline for her to follow.

I just watched this Blu the other night and I gotta say I think this flick got way over-hyped. I didn't find it to be THAT good. Sure, it's entertaining enough, but it wasn't like it was all that gory except for that stereotypical blood spray here and there. I was annoyed as soon as the Japanese girl was explaining the rules in her Hello Kitty voice on the video like some sorta stupid game show.

Considering what that actress is most famous for:

I'd say it was intentional.

Also, the film was never meant to be as gory as it even was. I believe those blood sprays were CGI'd in later to try to increase the gore quotient of the film. Fukusaku didn't want it.

Battle Royale is known for its themed violence, not gore…two completely different things.

At the time of its release, Battle Royale packed a more potent punch to the gut of its audiences. Not for its gore quotient, but for its satirical elements as well as the sheer idea of children murdering children. Late 90’s and earlier 2000’s saw numerous instances of violence within our U.S. school systems. Which is part of the reason, Battle Royale never saw the light of day here in the States. The theme of innocence in the classroom having it’s throat slashed wouldn’t have gone over well here, when our own children were spraying bullets in our school halls. Instead of Marilyn Manson and Natural Born Killers (film) being the scapegoat to school shootings, a lot of people for saw Battle Royale quite possibly being strewn in the mix as well,… and even though Battle Royale’s intent of pitting children in a competition to the death was to satirize the insanely competitive nature of Japanese schooling, a lot of American audiences would not have made that connection.

Secondly, also during this time frame, reality TV began its boom with the success of shows like Survivor and Big Brother. Two TV shows Battle Royale very much has in common with. Battle Royale was one of the first films to really take the reality TV element and twist it into something dark and totally evil-natured…which is how a lot of critics view reality TV presently.

Back then, Battle Royale was certainly ahead of its time. That’s why it was such a highly acclaimed and sought after film here in the States. It was a film that not only Japanese audiences, but American audiences could identify with.

Yeah, I'm not saying I didn't like because there wasn't much gore - I just went into it thinking there would be more and somewhat of a darker film. It seemed more like a reality spoof to me. Oh yeah, and exploding necklaces - where did they get that from?

And I have no friggin idea who NeonGenesis Evangelion is Good lord guy.

Battle Royale is certainly a dark film…more of a sarcastic dark film in the same vein as The Running Man.

But yeah…I hate all these people in an absolute uproar over the film/book of The Hunger Games similarities to Battle Royale with absolutely no mention of The Running Man (book or film) regarding either of the two. Stephen King dethrones them all!

Yeah, when I say "dark" I mean more morbidly.

Definitely a lot of Running Man similarities.

I watched the Director's Cut too so I'll try the theatrical next - perhaps better/shorter flow.

I actually kind of liked that part in the movie - thought it worked well with what the film was trying to do and kinda funny in a morbid weird way. There are some Running Man similarities - but not enough to make it seem it was trying to mimic that book/movie (unlike Hunger Games in comparison to Battle Royale)
