David Cronenberg's Best Film

I chose The Brood, absolutely fantastic, one of my favorite horror movies.

I've never seen a Cronenberg film that wasn't at least entertaining.

Videodrome is probably my personal favorite though.

I went with The Brood. I could watch that movie all the time. It's the only poster I have framed and hung up on my wall...and it's signed by Cronenberg!

Spider and A Dangerous Method are his worst...both extremely overrated.

It's tough for me to choose between The Fly and A History of Violence, but I ended up going with The Fly.

Shivers. It's the only one I ever have the urge to re-watch.

Yeah, it has that appeal for me too. There's just something special about it, kind of like how Tarantino's, Godard's, Carpenter's and Barker's first movies all seem to hold up the best over the years.

The Brood would be a close second, while it isn't quite as entertaining as Shivers the autobiographical complexities of Cronenberg's own marital problems at the time really make the film deeper than most of his works.

Cronenberg was never the same to me once he went high brow and started adapting other people's books. I've missed out on a few of his later films, including his last two, but the rest of his, in my order of preference is:

Shivers
The Brood
The Dead Zone
Rabid
Videodrome
Scanners
Eastern Promises
eXistenZ
The Fly
Fast Company
Dead Ringers
Crash
A History of Violence
Naked Lunch

probably my favorite living director. Its so hard to choose between Rabid, Videodrome, Naked Lunch, and Dead Ringers, but if I have to, I guess I'd go with Videodrome. The Fly, Scanners, The Dead Zone, A History of Violence, Crash, eXistenZ, The Brood - damn, there are so many really good ones. I would say the only one I find it hard to enjoy is Spider. It's just so inaccessible, kind of like the main character - it's well made in every respect, it's just not one I can get into at all, no matter how hard I try.

Why hasn't some genre company picked up Shivers for release? Its been OOP for so long, it needs to be brought back.

Still haven't seen A Dangerous Method yet. And I need to make time to see Cosmopolis some time soon.

Haven't seen his last two yet,of the others, well,it's a really tough call.I revist VIDEODROME a lot but THE BROOD has always gotten under my skin as a really disturbing effort.Actually he has yet to make a film I haven't liked.

Voted for Naked Lunch, that movie is well executed and totally out there. Ultimately the creative bending of Burrough's fiction with his life seems more of an artistic triumph showing directorial talent (ignoring plot) than the other albiet great films. Videodrome, Scanners, The Brood, and The Fly, etc etc are all well done too. Tough call.

Went with "Videodrome." "Spider" & "Shivers" are a close second. I'm not thrilled with Cronenberg's recent disparaging remarks regarding Christopher Nolan and his Dark Knight trilogy. They're both talented as hell.
