Jennifer Lynch & Richard Bates Jr.'s Halloween Top Ten 2012
Thanks to Anchor Bay we’ve been lucky to have horror directors submit their own Halloween Top Ten lists over the past five years. In 2008 it was END OF THE LINE's Maurice Devereaux, in 2009 it was GRACE's Paul Solet, in 2010 it was I SELL THE DEAD's Glenn McQuaid, last year it was BEREAVEMENT’S Stephen Mena and now this year we have not one, but two lists from some horror luminaries. The first is from Jennifer Lynch,

9. Dressed to Kill (1980) 8. The Exorcist (1973) 7. Session 9 (2001) 6. Carrie (1976) 5. Pet Semetary (1989) 4. Halloween (1978) 3. Jacob’s Ladder (1990) 2. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) 1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) John Carpenter’s masterpiece… Woefully underappreciated. 11. The Changeling (1980) Elegant and effective… the perfect slow burn… 10. Begotten (1990) Like nothing I’ve seen since… “A metaphysical splatter film.” 9. Eyes Without a Face (1960) Very real… Almost procedural… Ahead of its time. 8. Eraserhead (1977) Unique and personal… 7. Rosemary’s Baby (1968) A nearly perfect movie… 6. The Devils (1971) Striking visuals. Gutsy filmmaking. 5. Suspiria (1977) Absolutely gorgeous… Great deaths! 4. Hellraiser (1987) The first horror movie I ever saw. A great exploration of beauty in darkness… 3. Santa Sangre (1989) A profound, one of a kind cinematic experience… 2. Videodrome (1983) Sexy and cerebral... 1. Freaks (1932) Great characters. Great story. Great message. I’d like to personally thank both Jennifer and Richard for submitting their lists this year, and for Anchor Bay for coordinating these things for us as they do every year. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed our October Madness month. Have a safe and ghoulish Halloween! |

Watched both Chained and Excision on consecutive nights last week and would consider them among the best new horror of the year. Pretty cool that you have lists from both of them.

I saw Excision a few nights ago and it really surprised me. Traci Lords was almost unrecognizably good as an actress - she gave a really strong performance. The beginning of the movie didn't thrill me too much, there is a slow buildup with a fairly unlikable main character. But wow was the ending messed up (high praise).

Excision was based on the director's short film from 2008 of the same name, also worth checking out.
Highly recommend Chained for a standout performance from Vincent D'Onofrio. |

Loved Excision but can't really say the same about Chained unfortunately. The Story felt a bit ho hum for me. The performances were good but I've just seen that scenario done too often to get excited over it.

Still have yet to check out both new films from the filmmakers, but have liked Jennifer Lynch's previous output. Great lists though from both with some films I've still been meaning to see (Begotten and Eyes Without a Face for example).
