Horror films topping box office this year
Anyone else notice that horror films have been number one at the weekend box office 3 out of 4 weekends this year? First week was Texas Chainsaw, third week was Mama and this past weekend was Hansel and Gretyl! There are two more horror related films coming out in the next weeks, which could easily take the number one spots as well. I've only seen TC, but definitely want to see Mama and HaG, but not sure when I will get the chance.

Hansel and Gretal was quite good. I also enjoyed Mama but I skipped on Chainsaw 3D. Seemed more like a wait till it hits video title.

Don't horror films usually do great the opening weekend and quickly fizzle out shortly thereafter?
I loved both Texas Chainsaw 3D and Mama for completely different reasons. Which two genre films are coming out this month? |

Wow love for mama? I thought the first 3/4th of it were pretty good, but I think they really ruined the tempo in the last part by using too many direct shots.
TCM was one of my least fav. 2000ish sequels/reboots but still fun to see in theaters. Haven't seen H&G yet, and prolly wont unless it gets rave reviews. but any horror in theaters is better than no horror in theaters! wtg 2013!

I think the reason is often because they are smart enough to release them on weekends where there's not a lot else coming out. This is often a good time for horror films since it's kind of a slow time of year for other movies.

That's because it's January, the month where the studios dump all their crap so there's nothing else to see.

That may be, but it's still cool to see horror at the top! Gotta look at the positive side of things. lol

I've noticed Hansel & Gretel has already broken even internationally ($54M gross against a $50M budget). I don't know if Paramount and MGM wants a sequel, but for a movie that's been on the shelf for over a year, that's pretty good considering.

This hipster horror genre of today is too trendy for my taste. Can't say I honestly care what horror flick comes out anymore.

I liked Mama too. Very effective scares and visuals. Jessica Chastain and the kids performed well and had great chemistry.

Wife and I watched "Mama" last night and enjoyed it. Once again, the ghost loses it's effectiveness once it comes into view a bit too much. The ending was kind of lacking, but overall, it was worth checking out.
On a side note, it looks like "Warm Bodies" is going to be number 1 this weekend, so yet again, another horror related film is #1 at the box office! |

I don't think Paramount and MGM will make a sequel unless the movie makes more than $125M worldwide. (If we're going by the 2.5X multipler rule.) |
