Sledgehammer is definitely an acquired taste. You either love it or you hate it. The slow motion shots for no other reason than to pad the run time are hilarious. Most films would pick a dramatic event in the film to use slow motion, not Sledgehammer, it uses slow motion at the most random, unnecessary and WTF? times.

I actually think Sledgehammer does good use with the in-camera effects afforded by video-based production. Antonioni spent millions more for THE OBERWALD MYSTERY and his video effects aren't much better. I actually think the open-shutter stuff and slow mo during some of the attacks really create an unsettling feeling. It looks kind of rotoscoped, like a bad dream that just keeps on happening repeatedly right in front of your eyes. Boardinghouse is inept 80s fun, but I actually think a lot of Sledgehammer is legitimate filmmaking. Probably my favorite SOV flick.

In one of the more unexpectedly essential double-dips of recent memory, Slasher//Video serve up John Wintergate's BOARDINGHOUSE (aka HOUSEGEIST, 1983) in a packed special edition! Leopard print-thonged Jim inherits the Hoffman House, a California homestead with a hidden history of bloodshed. Realizing he'll need some help with the bills, he places an ad in the paper and begins filling vacancies with a varied assortment of '80s Valley babes. It's pool parties, meditation freak-outs, telekinesis and casual murder, climaxing with a house-warming shindig / psychic showdown. It's like a teen sex comedy with the occasional mental-power disembowelment.

Remastering the film from its original tapes to fix the problematic dark levels of the previous Code Red release, the disc also features a bonus extended cut that clocks in a full hour longer! I can't even imagine. Other supplements include commentary, interviews, music videos, trailers, galleries... they even have the hilariously obnoxious original "beeping" intro that was on the 35mm print I saw! Essential stuff for bizarro film connoisseurs worldwide.

Looks like Slasher//Video are having a sale at Amazon -- this and the rest of their titles are $10 a pop!

I have to confess, I'm still to watch the DC of Bordinghouse. I'm sure I'll get to it eventually but it hasn't been at the top of my 'things to do' list.

That $10 sale is pretty decent as well. Might has to suss out what else might interest me in their catalog.

For this price, I went ahead and ordered one. This is a pressed DVD, right? No burnt DVD-R.
