Abel Ferrara's FEAR CITY (1984) from Shout Factory

It's strippers vs. serial killer in Abel Ferrara's amazing FEAR CITY (1984), new to blu from Shout! Factory. Former boxer turned pimp Tom Berenger has to team up with police detective Billy Dee Williams to fight a karate killer in the streets of Times Square to save his star dancer Melanie Griffith. Also with Rae Dawn Chong and Maria Conchita Alonso as shakers, and Rossano Brazzi as a mafioso. Only in the '80s. (Unlike the earlier Anchor Bay DVD, this blu ray apparently contains both the "R" rated and Unrated edits!)

The awesome trailer (not safe for work):

I'm all over this one.

Strange it comes out in 2 weeks (according to bluray.com) but is only for sale (or even listed) on amazon, and doesn't show up on dvdpricesearch.

This is a Shout Select title, so you'll have to either order it direct from them off their website...or buy from a secondary seller.

It won't be a release that's sold at normal retailers.

The Amazon seller is Route66, who I believe is actually Shout Factory themselves. All of their items are Shout Select titles, and they get them weeks before "street" date.

It probably is then, as a secondary seller. Shout Factory always ships them way before the release date through their website as well.

But you won't see this title appear for sale on say... Deep Discount.

Thanks. Guess I have to order from them then, and I probably shouldn't wait for any sales that won't come right?
Any reason I shouldn't just order from amazon and save a buck on shipping? Any coupons for Shout! site?

Shout sometimes has sales on their website, but they're infrequent. This could be on sale at some point, or it may not.

I've always just ordered the Shout Select titles direct from their website, so I can't speak for their Amazon transactions.

I don't know of any coupons for their website store...

I know some people like it but I think this is one of Ferrara's worst. Yes the sleazy setting and story setup are great but the movie never really gets that exciting. This may be due to the cuts so if we get more footage I would like to see it.

Was Fear City actually shot in NYC? New York doesn't have alleys that wide and some of those streetscapes look like Downtown L.A.

BTW, this is already shipping.

Most of Abel's films were shot in NY, and he always looked for areas that others didn't or hadn't used. I recall him mentioning that on a commentary, although I can't recall which comm. (think it was King of New York, he was bitching about bridge and building shots looking like other movies and how he tried to avoid that. Maybe Bad Lieutenant). Of course this film has eluded me, but it's from the era when Abel was making dope shit, so I'm in this round!

So did I, about noon though. Guess they had more than one copy after all.
Forgot I couldn't combine for free shipping, sucks as I had something lined up but it'll have to wait.
