PUNK VACATION (1990) from Vinegar Syndrome 7/9
Punks(ploitation) Not Dead! Relive those VHS glory days with Stanley Lewis' PUNK VACATION (1990), coming to blu from Vinegar Syndrome. When a group of only-in-the-movies punk rockers get ripped off of $0.40 by a soda machine during their titular R&R, they stab an old man to death, igniting some ol' fashioned backwoods bloodshed with the whole damn redneck town. From then on it's kidnapping, posse shootouts, and gratuitous booby-traps. Directed by someone who obviously never saw a punk outside of period cop shows, the date reads '90, but this has the late '80s all over it. Relevant supplements include interview featurettes with the producer and one of the stuntmen. But that's not all...
While it would've made a perfect double-bill with Greydon Clark's SKINHEADS (the 1989 one where a group of neo-Nazis listen to Elvis Hitler and terrorize a group of camping students until WWII vet Chuck Connors has to man up), Vinegar Syndrome give us a double-bill of a different sort by including a DVD of Frank Roach's NOMAD RIDERS (1984)! When his family is murdered by vicious bikers, Steve Thrust (no, seriously) takes the law into his own hands. Never seen it. Can't wait. Cool news. Punk Vacation sounded familiar so I looked up critcononline and yep, it's one of those infamous Raedon video releases, so the movie should be definitely fun. I think as a double bill another Raedon release, Dead Girls (1990), would have been perfect!

Is Punk Vaca half as bad as that trailer? Looks like a blast if in the right mind for it, or a nightmare if not in the right mind.

Here's Joe Bob Briggs on the flick. Like you said, it's either good fun or simply terrible, depending on your mood.

I respect all the work this company is putting into their releases and Punk Vacation looks like it could be fun, but I have to admit that none of their other titles interest me in the slightest. It seems like everything else is pretty much softcore porn or extremely lowbudget snorefests. Glad others are enjoying their releases but I would be surprised if the label sticks around that long if they are spending all this time and money on titles like this as I don't see any of these selling through the roof. You would think they would release one bigger or at least more well known title here or there.

This looks fantastic! I haven't done a lot of blind-buying in more recent years but this looks right up my alley.

Vinegar Syndrome's output definitely isn't for everyone, but I'm ecstatic they're releasing oddball little titles that usually wouldn't get much TLC. We need someone to fill the void left by Something Weird -- another company I bought every release from!
Here's a ridiculous clip from NOMAD RIDERS, which I'm so excited about it's sick, haha. http://youtu.be/sFmisJEy_dw

I was really impressed with THE TELEPHONE BOOK. It's fascinating and fun. Easily one of my favorite films in the genre. I hope the commentary track is a good one.
THE SUCKERS is pretty good too. Far more sleazy and shocking than I was expecting. Anyone who has been buying Code Red's exploitation films will no doubt enjoy this film. I can't wait for THE VIXENS OF KUNG FU. I don't think Vinegar Syndrome's releases have any less appeal or chance of success than the tiles coming from Scorpion, Code Red and Synapse. Their releases have been of excellent quality and most are plenty entertaining. I would be disappointed if they started filling their release schedule with more recognizable titles. I say bring on more obscure oddities and softcore sleaze. |

To each their own, glad a lot of you are enjoying their titles, they just haven't released anything that I'm interested in (Or have even heard of) just yet which is too bad as it sounds like they put a lot of effort into their releases. I don't see any of these titles being huge sellers, or hitting more then a very small niche market, which is fine, but it's also got to be a little worrying if they are actually putting this much time and money into these titles. It doesn't look like many on here have really heard of a lot of these titles, and we are a site dedicated to these types of pictures. It's fine to releases these little films, but usually you release a big one here and there to get your company a following first. And not big like a John Carpenter flick, but at least something a little more recognizable. There have been many companies like this that have come and gone just as quickly, hopefully this isn't another. Last edited by spawningblue; Yesterday at 11:05 PM. |

Sometimes you just have to dive into a film you know absolutely nothing about, and sometimes you find a lost gem. The Telephone Book was like that for me.
