Bad Boys (Rick Rosenthal)

Watched this again the other night, and once again found it to be reasonably entertaining. Of course, what was grity and shocking at the time this one was made comes across as lightweight now, and coming four years after Scum one might have expected something with a bit more weight.

On the other hand, Rosenthal wanted something that could be shown in mainstream cinemas at the time, so he went with this. Sean Penn is good in it - although he just got better and better over time so this one doesn't feel like his best work - and the story is sick enough to entice exploitation fans.

Worth seeing, and from what I heard of it, the Rosenthal commentary is pretty damn good.

Anyone?

It remains a gritty favorite of mine from the era of the 80's. It's been a good 20 years now since I first viewed the film, but it still works well.

The Anchor Bay DVD (re-release) contains the uncut version as well, which really is the definitive intended cut of the film. The audio commentary is indeed quite informative, although it's been about 4-5 years since I listened in on it.

I'm not quite sure why this is listed in the horror section though?

I've seen this at work lots of times but always pass it up, most likely due to the crummy cover:

But after hearing some decent things, I might have to pick it up.

Erm, well, there must be some element of horror in it somewhere. Or... maybe I just didn't think it through enough? Dammit.

Have you seen "Scum", Katatonia?

I generally see 'em every day.

But no, I don't think that I've ever seen the film before.

I'd be interested in your view. In many ways it's similar, but feels far more "gritty" to me. Be interested in your views/comparison if you ever catch up with it.

Oh, and......

I watched this on blu-ray tonight - hadn't seen it in years - this really is a great movie from the early 80's - Also I had no idea Jamie Lee Curtis has a small cameo role in it- but if you look for her sure enough there she is as a passerby on the street! Also kinda cool to see Halloween 2 listed as playing at the movie theatre in this film- I also didnt know until now that it was the same director that did both Bad Boys and Halloween 2 - anyways for anyone that has never seen this one give it a watch- it screams 80's movie but is well done. The picture quality on the blu-ray is pretty meh , but at least it didn't have any cuts like I heard an early dvd version had.

The Blu-ray's picture quality is ruined by the overuse of DNR. It's a gritty movie, and they scrubbed off most of the grain...bastards!

The only cut R1 DVD was the earliest one released by Artisan in 1999, which had around 20 minutes cut out. The Anchor Bay DVD from 2001, and all newer releases have been fully uncut.

i only seen the R rated version, what is the diffrence between the uncut version? any addtional violence? This was and is still one brutal film, the violence and this is how prison life was and maybe is today in real life. You have to be strong to survive something like that. Most people arent... Speaking of prison, we never hear of what happnes to all these criminals we see in the headlines that do all these bad things, but i bet they got some shocking stories of what happens to them in prison.. Beatings, rapes, and being made someones kid.. ouch. no thanks. think iam gonna pass this up. I met someone whos been to prison and he said its exactly how its potrayed in tv and movies to the tee....

Have only ever seen the old VHS version released here many years ago, which I assume was probably cut. Think it was a Thorn EMI tape from memory. Thanks for the heads up, just ordered the Blu from amazon, only $7.60 at the moment.

The "complete uncut" versions of the film are "Rated R" also...at least they've been displayed that way on the uncut Anchor Bay DVD from 2001 & also the Lionsgate Blu-ray.

As long as the film is listed at either 123 or 124 minutes in length, it's uncut.
