If these are anything resembling the quality of their excellent The Big Gundown release, they should be great. I'm going to wait and see some reviews first however.

I picked up DEATH RIDES A HORSE from Diabolik DVD but haven't had a chance to pop it in yet. Their BIG GUNDOWN was good, but definitely artificially sharpened -- something much more easily noticed when compared to Grindhouse's excellent Stateside edition.

I popped in DEATH RIDES A HORSE for a glance last night, and it's an MGM restoration, looking quite good as their stuff typically does. It's also worth noting it played fine on my regular player, so these are actually All-Region and NOT Region B locked.

Germany seems to be something of a perfect storm:

1) The market is so small that rights owners will licenses to distributors much cheaper.

2) Germans are more exacting in details both as sellers and buyers. I don't think there is a German phrase for "good enough."

3) Their cult fans are pretty strong and rabid, devoted enough to buy premium re-releases with different covers and packaging ("hardboxes" and steelbooks). This makes for a steady and profitable market.

4) Economically Germany is very strong right now, their middle class is much stronger than the US and other Western nations and are able to consume more freely (for the size of their population).

Here in America on the other hand any given movie can be a home run that sells millions or a dud that doesn't even sell hundreds. This makes licensing prices hard to gauge. Americans on a whole couldn't care less about quality and are more concerned with costs. I think thread on Synapse's Demons releases are a perfect example of that. Running a profitable company therefore is more about how to create something for the masses as cheaply as possible. This race to the bottom creates a downward spiral where consumers have to spend less so to make goods for less companies pay less to employees (consumers).

Synapse, Shout! Factory and yes even Code Red have adopted measures to help combat this. Distributors like Twilight Time and yes even Massacre Video were born out of this. Limited distribution at a premium, this is what produces many of the more desirable releases in Germany.

Incredibly low filesize for Death Rides A Horse and it looks like there are some compression issues in that last screenshot. Expect it looks fine in motion though.
