Amos Sefer's AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL from Grindhouse Releasing 9/10

After a seeming eternity of waiting, Grindhouse Releasing finally unpack Amos Sefer's AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL (1972). When 'Nam vet-turned-pacifist Mike hooks up with a commune of like-minded freedom seekers, all seems well with the world. But a group of machine gun-toting mimes have a different plan, and after a love-in massacre Mike and his fellow few survivors are forced to flee to a deserted island to live out their idyllic dreams of life out of the fast lane. However, tides soon turn when they find they're stranded with diminishing supplies; peace, love and understanding go out the window as the group regresses into an animalistic, primal state.

Practically unseen since its initial release, Grindhouse Releasing have been building anticipation for AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL for years, and, as expected, haven't skimped on its debut. Announced supplements include an alternate cut, deleted scenes, multiple interviews, shorts, news clips, and more; you can pretty much expect every base to be covered. "Fools. Fools! Stop pushing buttons!"

Not taking a chance and preordered a copy even though the film was dead last on my wantlist out of the new Grindhouse announcements (the synopsis sold me on it). Just to be sure, Amazon doesn't charge your card right away, do they?

Correct. Amazon does not charge your credit card until they ship.

$35 is full retail -- I imagine it'll drop to the mid-$20s before actual streetdate. I already put in my order, so I'll get whatever the lowest price between now and shipdate is.

The impression I get is that this film, along with many of the other ones Grindhouse will release, are shoestring-budgeted do-it-yourself projects made by passionate film students, which got either shoddy distribution or none at all. That may be where the "legendary" label comes from, the fact that nobody has seen these films, not that they're necessarily good. The word "hippie" in the title is enough to turn me off, mainly because I've seen so many bad movies about hippies that I don't want to see another one but the trailer for this one has me a little interested.

I may be down for a blind buy on this one. I tend to be drawn to this kind of thing, which may say something about my taste level. As far as bad hippy movies, I love shit like I DRINK YOUR BLOOD and other 70s crapfests that exploit a subversive demographic.

This one just looks... ehhhh based on the trailer. I'm interested in seeing it, but not enough to justify a blind buy at the price they're wanting.
