Dead 'Til Dawn Drive In Show 2014

I've been the last two years and they've been a blast. (Even won a Wizard big box VHS copy of Dreamaniac last year!) They've now announced the dates and titles for this year and it seems like the list is even more obscure than ever! I'm also learning about the show far earlier than in the past so hopefully this heads up will give some of you greater leeway to plan…

From their Facebook page:

If I could afford to travel, it'd be fun to attend such an event. Unfortunately their is nothing close to that in my state.

I'm just impressed they're able to find 35mm prints of all these films. The shipping costs alone easily negate any money they make on admission.

Are there incidences of film breakage? I'd expect that to happen a lot with so many older prints.

Not yet, fortunately, but last year it came really close. The people who put this show together are smart enough to play all of the nice prints first. After 11pm the prints begin showing their age, getting progressively more scratched and red. The last film from last year was so red and gummy at the reel changes that we were all sure that we'd never get to see the end.

I'm probably getting way too technical here, but do you know if they have the platter system, or are going reel-to-reel? In the reel-to-reel system (much older), there's two projectors and they'll spool up a reel and just go back and forth. On newer systems, the entire print is assembled into one giant reel, then just plays through. The problem is that it involves more handling by the projectionist, as well as taping all the reels together. A good projectionist can make everything run really smoothly. An amateur will do a craptacular job, the tape can break, they'll get their grubby oily hands all over the print; basically a recipe for disaster.

I can't say it with absolute authority, but we are reasonably certain that they use the platter system.
