Upcoming Horror DVD Set In 3-D
I found an interesting release for july. A boxed set of generic 3-D horror flicks with different themes like slashers, zombies, etc. But also included in the set is what sounds to be a decent quality 3-D viewing system. The field seq. type with shutter glasses, video sync control, etc. Thought it may interest some other people.

Probably comes with a pair of cheap cardboard glasses (and if you watch the movie without glasses, you won't be able to watch the film).

Well, the movies themselves might be a drag but I'm sure the 3-D effects will be good. Especially since they're using the field sequential viewing system. I already have the equipment. Back in the pre-dvd days I just had to see Friday The 13th Pt. 3 in 3-D so I bought a copy in field sequential 3-d format from a 3-D company www.3dmagic.com and then bought the viewing equipment cheaper on ebay. This was many years ago so the transfer wasn't perfect but the 3-D effects were great. The company I've linked also carries several more horror titles in 3-D field sequential format. So anyone who buys the above mentioned boxed set will already have the equipment to view them. Trust me using this type of equipment is the only way to view decent 3-D at home. Don't think it's going to be anything like the cheesy red/blue glasses deal with other 3-D releases such as "Freddys Dead".

After I posted a link to 3-D Magic I started to browse the site to see what was new. They now have Friday 3 listed as an upcoming release (as well as pt.1 ???) even though I bought it from them years ago. Strange. Maybe their re-releasing it remastered or something.

Looks good to me. I'll check it out when it hits store shelves. Do any of these DVDs have extras?

I like 3-D movies, but I've always wondered if one of the reasons they don't work on TV is due to room and screen size PROPORTIONS.
A movie screen takes up the side of a giant wall. When Udo Kier's gall bladder is hanging on the end of a spear in Flesh for Frankenstein, it looks like it's hovering right over your head. Now, on a TV screen, just how far can the image come out? I don't know the specs of 3-D, but I figure that it can't come out any distance more than the width of the screen, right? So, unless you're sitting RIGHT in front of the TV, instead of Udo Kier's gall bladder hanging over your head, it's just sticking out of the TV a bit. Thus, 3-D TV would be nowhere near as effective as it is in the theater. Personally, I think it's time for another theatrical 3-D revival...

3d Magic has been showing most 3-d titles as future releases for over a year. I doubt we'll see any good titles from this company.
I e-mailed them about the "future releases" and they replied that no timetable has been set for any of the titles. |

Paff, Your right no tv will ever replicate a full sized theatrical 3-D viewing. But 3-D can still be quite impressive using the field sequential system, your home screen is smaller but so is the room your sitting in. I think the reason 3-D home releases are avoided by companies is due mostly to the money involved in making a decent 3-D home release. Too many companies have tried to release 3-D discs/tapes using cheap methods of 3-D encoding and even cheaper paper glasses. It doesn't even end up working on most TVs and if it does work it's pretty blah. This box set will be the first legit field sequential 3-D home video release to date...at least the first one available at regular retailers. Kudos to whatever company is doing this (3 sites give 3 different labels). It takes guts to try to market a dvd set that can only be viewed by additional electronic equipment.

Crow: The Friday the 13th message board is what got me to find out about the Friday 3-D video tape in the first place. The webmaster (blake I think his name is) actually used to sell dubs of it. I wouldn't recommend a 2nd or 3rd generation dub though, the reduced quality would most likely lessen the 3-d effect.
The 3-D magic site I linked is where I bought mine but it seems they no longer have the version I bought available since it's now listed as an upcoming release. But it says they'll carry dvd's in the winter so maybe it will be available on a better quality dvd. Expensive as hell though. As for the viewing equipment. Search around. There's alot of dealers that sell field sequential 3-D viewing systems but they can go from 150.00 up into the thousands. Or,keep checking ebay they pop up once in awhile. But if you wait until july and buy the dvd box set that I started this thread over then you'll have the equipment, which will be included with it. Heres a link to someone selling a 3-D tape of Friday 3 on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll...tem=1540655946 Last edited by gunner; 05-31-2002 at 03:04 AM. |

Last year I purchased the box set of IMAX films from DVDEMPIRE and the stereoscopic glasses. Yes, they are attached to a wire, but the effect is worth it! It simply blows any of the crap TV 3-D systems out of the water. And anyone I subjected it to was floored.
Yeah, the DVDs had crap narrative and such, but the visual effects were stunners. Added to this, I picked up a 3rd generation widescreen bootleg of the FRIDAY THE 13th PART 3 on VHS. even in this washed out condition, it was still streets ahead of the other systems available! I've been trying to make people aware of this since I think a big push towards this could result in some studios taking notice. While I doubt Paramount could care less, Im sure studios lke Anchor Bay might try a 3-d transfer as an extra. I emailed them concerning their upcoming PARASITE dvd, but alas it is coming in flat. But if they are doing more Universal titles, perhaps this would be a fine time to see JAWS 3 with this as an extra!!! |

Damn, I stand corrected. After I read your post I went to dvdempire. This Imax release is in field sequential format. I was thinking these horror titles were the first to be released this way. Using this system does make a HUGE difference. I think it's hard for people who haven't experienced it to realize because their so used to the red/blue lens crap. They think the action only comes off the screen a few inches or so,if at all. Also, did you notice that the field sequential glasses make some ordinary tv images look almost 3-D?
It's funny you mention Paramount. 6 years ago or so they were contemplating a field sequential 3-D lbx laserdisc release of Part 3, there was even a dedicated Friday 3 website run by a paramount employee that had a petition which was by paramount themselves not a fan, that was supposed to determine if the ld would be profitable enough to validate the release. Alot of people signed it but Paramount ended up chickening out (typical) but it's still nice to know they toyed with the idea.I was hoping maybe the dvd would be in 3-D instead but oh well,at least I still have a decent 3-D vhs. |
