Stephen King's "The Shining" Mini-Series coming to DVD

According to the folks over at HTF, Stephen King's 1997 TV Mini-series "The Shining" is getting prepped for DVD. Steve Tannehill who ran the old DVD Resource site got this comment from Director Mick Garris:

"Yes, it's true; we're finally doing THE SHINING dvd. King will be recording commentary on Tuesday, Steven Weber on Monday, and I'll probably be doing mine on Friday. I'll be bringing in the FX people, the editor, the composer, and my wife (the Ghost in Room 217), and others. We'll have a half-hour making of, a still library, and other stuff, pending rights from ABC. It should be a pretty danged cool disc (at long last)."

never seen it..but i did like the movie pretty well...is the series good?

The miniseries is much more faithful to the book, but is totally destroyed by some unforgivably bad sentimental scenes (especially at the end), some awful casting (Tony/Danny as teenager springs to mind), and Mick Garris (one of the least talented horror directors there is). About Mick Garris: He seems to view Stephen King as almost God-like, and doesn't seem to dare to remove things from the screenplays (The Stand, The Shining) which obviously won't work on screen. The result is sometimes pretty embarrassing, IMO. Having said this, I'd recommend RENTING The Shining miniseries if possible before buying it, if you haven't already seen it and loved it.

The only good thing about The Shining Miniseries was that in order to do it, Stanley Kubrick got King to agree to cease discussing the feature film version. King disclosed this at a book reading after people began asking questions about Kubrick's The Shining.

So everything worked out in the end I guess

I thought The Shining Mini-series was pretty good, but not even close to being in the same league as the film. There are some scary moments in the film, and it is much truer to the novel. It is longer, and I like what Kubrick did with the Jack Torrance character at the end of the film much better than what Garris does in this version.

If those commentaries end up on the disc, then I will definitely be picking it up.

I dont know about this. Why would anyone watch the mini-series when youve got a perfectly good movie in your collection? And isnt Stephen Weber in it? He was on Wings. I think I have said enough.

The mini-series is a completely different film than the film. The film focuses on insanity in the individual, while the series focuses on a haunted house. Very different, indeed.

I'm glad that this is finally coming to DVD as I had taped it when it originally aired but accidently recorded over the tape before I could watch it. I never could find anyone else who had it for me to borrow.

Great news.
I taped the 3 parts when it was first on TV, but the tape with 1st part on it got eaten by my old vcr 2 years ago, and I never bother to get the import vcds on ebay.

I loved Kubrick's film, I loved the novel. I thought Kubrick did the best he could with what is essentially a novel that takes place most of the time in Danny's head. The horrors in the novel were more ethereal and difficult to capute in a visual medium. I was excitted about the topiary animals... but they are just laughable. Kubrick madet eh right choice when avoiding them. But Kubrick came away with a masterpiece. The mini-series is passable at best.

The mini-series is a large pile of shit. My opinion, but there was alot of useless stuff, the kid is irritating just to look at, the acting is pretty lame, the scope is toned down, the ending is total shit, the direction is passable. And the explanation of Danny's friend is pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fact.... Stephen King himself can not adequatly adapt a Stephen King novel. I hated the mini-series with a passion. And for the life of me I can not understand King's hate of Kubrick's film. In the wake of the godawful series, King's hate comes off trite and pretentious.

Did anyone actually like the miniseries better that the Kubrick adaptation? Sure, it's closer to the book but who really gives a shit? People should realize that liturature and film are two very different things. There are things that can't be shown on film and other things that can't adequately be described in print. Kubrick was a genius and his version was fantastic. I read, and enjoyed, the book as well.

The miniseries is a total piece of shit, IMO. Come on, the guy from Wings is supposed to be Jack. What a joke!
