after going through the sea of ambiguity on ebay, I wanted to know if there was REALLY a dvd (r1, or r0) of The Ring? Or is it that all of the ones on ebay are actually vcds (since I never saw a dvd lable on any).

thanks

i think those R0/NTSC dvds of The Ring 1 & 2 on ebay are bootlegs, but i wouldn't let that stop you from getting it! (there are PRESSED dvd bootlegs, so just because there isn't a dvd logo, that doesn't mean it's not a dvd)

seriously, if that's the only way you can see the movie, then go for it!

if i'm not mistaken, there was a guy selling DVDs of part 1 & 2 for only $30 (total) on ebay. The dvds are R0/NTSC.

If it IS a VCD, I'll be sure to let you know since I'm one of the (potential) suckers that has bid on these items! Personally, given the seller's great track record, I don't see why he would want to ruin his reputation on ebay by misleading so many people. At least a hundred people have bought these discs! Rest assured, if I'm sent a VCD when I'm promised a DVD, I WILL give him a bad reference!

There are official Tartan R0 PAL versions of these disks, and there are HK knockoff copies of the Tartan disks which are all over ebay.

I very, very seriously doubt that the R0 NTSC disks anyone is selling on ebay are really NTSC. They're just boots of the PAL Tartan disks.

I dunno, they've been doing alot of this lately. These boots are professionally made, many of the originals lack subtitles, whereas the bootleggers put in the effort to sub them. So region changes and code changes have been occuring too. There are NTSC bootlegs of JUNK floating around, when it was only released officially as region 2/PAL

There are NTSC R1 (or R0, not sure) discs of this film, but without English subs or dubbing... Check out PokerIndustries. There's, like, a dozen different discs of the Ring movies. I can't keep 'em all straight.

Guess what? I have Ring and Ring 2 on official All-Region NTSC discs from Tartan. I bought them in NY, same as my copy of Versus. The movies are widescreen, no features, but they play on my R1 player. They cost me $17 a piece and were worth the cash just to have them on disc. So if you seem em on e-bay, they're real.

When did Tartan ever release Ring 1 or 2 as NTSC?

For an example of a boot look here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1560253248

See the small logo down in the bottom left? That's a sure fire giveaway it's a boot. It's some pirate company that takes the Universe Laser logo (a large gold U in front of 3 horizontal colored lines) and shits a gold W in front of the U. I've mostly seen them pirate Universe Laser's stuff as an R0 disk. Ichi, Battle Royale, GXM, and others. They're also the outfit that has made some of the Versus bootlegs on Ebay.

Finally received NTSC region 1 copies of Ring and Ring 2 today. They do appear to be bootlegs, but I can't tell if they're DVD-Rs or not. I don't own any of those to compare them to. At any rate, there aren't any extras and once you press play it goes straight to the opening credits... no disclaimers or FBI warnings at the beginning or even a studio banner. Also, there's a bit of compression, but no more so than a lot of lower budget titles... The Changeling is one that comes instantly to mind. And much more watchable than Salems Lot. The worst thing I can say is that the subtitles are burned into the image and thus are difficult to read at times, but I've becomed accustomed to this in asian films. I'd rate the transfer at a "C" for average. It's definitely acceptable until a decent domestic version is released and who knows when that'll be?

If you can do the PAL conversion the Tartan R0 is damn good. Decent transfer, the UK trailer, a trailer for Ring2, a still gallery and a fairly long review (in english). And the coolest thing is they have the entire video sequence as an extra.

If you have an XBox it does the PAL/NTSC conversion flawlessly too.

I too have the NTSC, umm, "Tartan" Ring and Ring 2. Quality is pretty good, although it's pretty tough to read the subs on Ring: irremovable white letters burned into the picture (another sign of a bootleg) instead of removable subs below the widescreen frame.

Beats the hell out of the Ring boot I got at a sci fi convention...$25 and unwatchable. D'oh
