Panic Room sucks.......

Not the movie. Well, actually I dont know since I didnt see it, I'm talking about the DVD. What the hell is Columbia's problem? They give a new Fincher movie the lamest disc EVER. First off, its a Supershit title, which means no special features (not even a trailer) to provide "optimum sound and video quality" which usually isnt better than a regular 16X9 version. Great. Then, it gets packaging thats a 1/3 the width of a normal case, is this so that you can lose it in your collection? Whats the problem here? I wanted to pick this up BADLY on Tuesday, but now I'm passing so I can wait till sometime next year for the eventual 2-disc SE. Anyone else hate this shit?

Not really, I love Superbit. What I've seen of Superbit releases have really impressed me, so I will be snagging this up. And I will pick up a SE when/if its released if its got a commentary. Fincher does great on commentaries, etc. But for film-watching, Superbit is worth every penny!

I can't comment on SuperBit since I do not have a 16x9 television. The sound is definitely better than other releases though. But the difference is not substantial enough that I would pick a superbit title over an SE. I'll wait for the SE of Panic Room instead.

i just pick up both for movies i love (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for instance). for normal things tho, id go with a SE myself.

Yeah I saw it on the silver screen, and I wanted my money back. There are some interesting scenes, but not enough to keep my attention.

OK I guess none of you have actually PUT Panic Room Super Bit in your DVD player yet?

First off this is the first Non-Deluxe Superbit I have seen with any extras on it. It has both the trailer and filmographies of the director, writer and stars.

And in another first for Superbit (At least the ones I have seen so Far) it has a mildly animated themed menu in place of the Superbit blue extra basic menu.

I kind of don't like them Tinkering with the Super Bit formula.

As for the case, you know it must really be crap when it makes one long for a WB Snapper.

As for Superbits in general....
I can tell you that in the several cases where I have both the early DVD and the Superbit follow up (Desperado, Fifth Element, Dracula, and Anaconda The super bit version clearly looked and sounded better on my Setup. So don't be too quick to put them down. Maybe you don't need or want the picture quality of a superbit, but the bigger the set the more you do need it and I am guessing that everyone here does at somepoint want to have a large Set, which means buying for the future.

there is a trailer on it. It's not a great movie, but is somewhat entertaining. My least favorite Fincher movie.

I watched the DVD just a little while ago and I am impressed enough. I own a rear-projection TV and trust me, you can feel the difference of Superbit titles better with these TVs. I mean, I hadn't watched Panic Room in a cinema but hey man, it is really dark and it is really hard to handle grains and artefacts. So, Columbia had no choice but to release this as a Superbit title. I strongly believe that Columbia will release a Deluxe edition later but anyway, it's worth the money. I liked the packaging either. I am a serious DVD collector, too but I am really happy to own some titles having extra-ordingary packaging...

The thing about Super Bit DVD's is now most Special Editions are two disc sets, the movie on one disc, the extras on the other. They could just make all superbits 2 disc sets so they can put some extras on it.

i don't really care about the extras. If I bought a big widescreen and home theater I want the best looking video and audio I can get. The movie was pretty good and the dvd looked very nice but not a whole lot better than a regular dvd with a very good transfer. This is the only superbit dvd I have as i already own the regular versions of other superbits or I don't want the others. I don't know if the other superbits look a lot better than the regular ones though but I will be buying the superbit versions of future releases from now on.

Just rented Panic Room tonight

First of all, about the Superbit...I STILL don't see what's so damn amazing about it (although yes, I do have a 4x3 NTSC screen). I thought the image quality was more than a little fuzzy, and a little too dark. I have other non-SB titles that look way better.

Nice DTS sound though.

On the movie, not bad, but I liked it a lot better the first time I saw it when it was called Wait Until Dark.

On it's own, I'd give it an A. But from Fincher, who I KNOW can do better, it's a B-

Panic Room as a Super Bit many are saying does not live up to the quality of the other superbit DVDs. I however think it looks much like the film and there is lots of stuff in Panic Room that is very hard on MPEG compression. You see those grainy movies can really mess up MPEG.

Generally on Super Bit DVDs you really won't see a whole lot of difference until you are using a 16x9 set or at least a 4x3 set with a squeeze mode, because otherwise you are still suffering from downconversion artifacts and such when the DVD player scales a 16x9 title to 4x3 and you should have at least a 55" image or bigger on your set.

I have a 73" widescreen set and several DVDs in both Super Bit and Non-super bit and every single one of them clearly looks better in their super bit form.

You may be right Max. I have a 47 inch widescreen hdtv and as I said the dvd does look good. Maybe I need to sample the fifth element superbit or hollow man dvds to see how different it looks from the original dvds.
