I'm not gonna pass judgment on this until I see it. From what I've seen of the TV spots, it looks good, but so did Hannibal. Don't get me wrong, Hannibal was good, it just wasn't the spectacular movie I had thought it was going to be.

Well, it's based on the same novel.
Supposedly, this version will be truer to the original text than Manhunter. I don't know if I believe that. In the book, Hannibal Lecter is limited to a few short segments. I can't imagine them publicizing Anthony Hopkins as Lecter for what would essentially be 5-6 minutes on screen. So I'm sure they'll be expanding Lecter's role in this. I wish they'd have kept Scott Glenn as Jack Crawford (Crawford is very prominent in Red Dragon. My guess is that they're gonna change some of the Graham/Crawford conversations to Graham/Lecter). But Anthony Heald will be back as Dr. Chilton. There were only two things really wrong with Manhunter. One was the overt 80s style. Notice how Silence of the Lambs, made only a couple years later has aged MUCH better. That's 'cause Jonathan Demme gave it a more "timeless" look than Michael Mann's "contemporary" Manhunter. The second thing wrong with Manhunter is that they really softened the Dolarhyde character. He was a MONSTER in the book, seriously messed up in the head. I highly suggest that everyone read Red Dragon, it's easily the best novel of the series. No movie will ever completely capture the novel well, since much of it occurs completely in the minds of Will Graham and Francis Dolarhyde.

Manhunter also fucked up the ending to the story! also could be said with Hannibal as well. Hopefully the new RD film will keep the book's ending as it was great!

I enjoyed Manhunter, and I am highly anticipating Red Dragon. Ed Norton, Harvey Keitel, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ralph Fiennes and of course Anthony Hopkins are all sensational actors, and this should easily be the best cast of the Lecter trilogy. I thought Silence of the Lambs was good but not worthy of all the praise that it received, and I thought Hannibal on the other hand, was mildly underrated.
Red Dragon though, easily has the potential to be the best Lecter film, and I am very eager to see it. I doubt it will be as beautiful as Michael Mann's Manhunter, but there is certainly grounds to be improved upon regarding the story. I really hope this movie lives up to its immense hype. One thing that kind of irks me though, is that despite all the supposed make-up effects designed to make Hopkin's look younger, he still looks way too old for the part (judging by the trailers). He looks roughly the same as he did in Hannibal, except that his face appears to have been airbrushed. But I guess when you are devoting thousands of dollars on digitally altering Ralph Fiennes penis(!) money just tends to dry up. These complaints aside, I am still very excited. I am surprised the remake police haven't cracked down on this film yet...

I saw the trailer for "Red Dragon" in the theatre and it looks really cool. Even though I enjoyed "Manhunter" I'm expecting this to be way better.
As far as "Hannibal" goes, I kind of thought it sucked when I watched it the first time (I was half sleeping while I was watching it). Then I watched it again, and found it to be an excellent movie. Cheers to Dr. Lecter. |

Manhunter blew ass. It had a gay 80's porn title and even the opening titles look homo-laden. Red Dragon will be the shit. The casting appears to be perfect and Norton is one of my favorite actors. I've got a lot of faith in this flick.
