Thumbs up Anyone bought LORD OF THE RINGS extended edition yet?

I haven't, but I thought I'd ask. I'm planning on it this weekend first thing as soon as I get paid!

Mine's at home. UPS brought it as I was headed out the door for work. I didn't even get to open the box and check out the bookends.

Red face My thoughts...

An epic film with tons o' extras! I don't know what scenes were added compared to the other DVD version but this movie rocks! Gandalf rocks and the rest of the cast is great though Pip is annoying at times. The adventure is visually stunning (CGI) and the plot is slow moving at times but that isn't a problem for me since it gives time for characters to act / react to the enviroments and what lies ahead in their journey. The extras are abundant and very informative with 2 disks filled to the brim with bonus materials. I bought the box set with the extra National Geographics disk (again, informative) included and the book ends (sweetness). All in all, this set is one of the most elaborate and well rounded DVD releases that I've seen in years.

I got it Tuesday morning and opened it Tuesday afternoon. The bookends are AWESOME. I expected them to be kinda cheesy, but they were heavy, well made, and hold up my DVD boxsets and Anchor Bay tins perfectly!

The packaging is very cool as well. They made the extended cut packaging look like a book. It's one of the classiest looking DVD covers I have seen. I won't be able to watch the movie at least until this weekend due to the runtime, but I did pop it in for a few scenes. The picture quality looks pretty much the same as the theatrical DVD release. The sound has been kicked up a notch with the DTS-ES track. I cannot wait to watch this movie. Initially, the LOTR extended cut was just a movie that I knew I'd enjoy in my collection. Judging by my early looks, it may just be the best DVD purchase I have made all year.

I had to get the 5-disc. It just looked too sweet sitting there on the shelf. The bookends kicked ass, not as tall as I would have thought/liked, but all the contents of the box make it so worth while. It even had movie cash for the new flick.

I thought about just leaving them in the package, but I figured what the hell. If I get something 'collectable', 99.9% of the time it is for me. I keep an eye on its resale value, but rarely would I sell it.

It depends on the item as to how I display it. My Movie Maniacs are still in their packaging. I have them displayed on my wall and that was the best way for me to 'show them off'. I wouldn't sell them, but I will most likely never open them. I figured I'd put the bookends to good use. It's kinda cool having those on the end of your boxsets rather than some lame metal ones. It gives the discs a little more character.

I bought the 4 disc extended edition. Ever since I saw this movie in theaters last year it has become my personal favorite movie. Yes, horror movies are still my favorite genre, but this movie is my personal favorite. Peter Jackson has created a film with beautiful scenery and has a great cast. I'm much looking forward to the next 2 installments. Anyway, this new extended version only serves to actually improve the movie, as it fleshes out the characters even more. My personal favorite DVD purchase this year.

edit......sheesh, you think I could say personal anymore? Doh, I said it again!!!

Wow, that set is loaded!!!! I bought the 5 disc gift set and those lil bookends look awesome!! The extras are plentiful, there is so much stuff on them, I haven't had time to watch all of it. I did watch the extended version of the film and I must say, it is a much better film. More character development is present, more action (Cave Troll rules!!!!!)more humour and the new stuff added in the prologue with Isildur was the best!!! A Good Purchase! Can't wait for the second film to open next month.

cheers!!!

Had every intention of getting just the 4 disc, but the 5 disc set was too fucking cool to pass on. Haven't removed the bookends yet, not sure if I will. Then the box would be all alone, and I can't throw it out! This is one of the best dvd sets yet. Be sure to check out the 2 great easter eggs, instructions here;
