I got mine from ebay years ago but the one from the US seller on lddb isn't too much more than I paid. I don't think I've seen this one on ebay in a while so I'm not sure what the going rate is on there though, the $16 I paid was likely excluding shipping.

Getting a little too LD happy lately, but I've found some decent prices on some of the last lasers released. This one is a guilty pleasure for me as both my kids enjoy it. I actually don't have the DVD anymore (lost in a move), so I'm actually buying something I don't own already.
Paff: Didn't you mention you use posterboard and velcro to block off japanese subtitles? I may try that, trick. When I watch Haunting, the subtitles were driving my youngest nuts. They don't bother me, but the posterboard trick seems like a no-brainer. The only downside is I would have to watch the movies only at night, as seeing the posterboard during the day would probably bother me more than the subtitles. |

Of course, by blocking off the bottom black bars, you would block off subtitles usually. Not acceptable if you need the subtitles, but perfect in situations like yours where you don't want the subtitles. I don't do that on my plasma, as flat movies fill the screen, and scope movies nearly fit the screen. Plus the blacks on a plasma are much better than that of a CRT. Oh, and my mattes would also have to be twice as big!! I finally got my paycheck from Latino Film Festival, and used it to buy this scaler: http://www.amazon.com/Atlona-Video-S...0544878&sr=8-9 I was gonna go with another Gefen (which coincentally we use a different scaler from them at that film festival), but this one has more functions, and I like the review you see on that Amazon page. I bought it from someone else though, in case I need to return it. Expect a report from me within a week or so.

First impression of the scaler is rather underwhelming. I really see no difference between using the scaler, and just running the LD player straight into the plasma.
I'm gonna have to try more tweaking, like using Video Essentials. Might have to see what the S-Video input does, although my understanding of LD is that it will not improve anything. Don't run out and buy one just yet...

I don't have a player, but I got a few dirt cheap to hang on my wall...
Halloween Criterion Tremors Scream Director's cut Godfather 2001 Pulp Fiction Alien Urotsukidoji Evil Dead Elite I'm also thinking of picking up Taxi Driver, Robocop Criterion, and Nightmare on Elmstreet Elite. I'll eventually pick up a player too, because the dvds of these movies lack some of these features (all though I already own all of these like three or four times over on vhs and dvd, I even have the NOES Elite vhs port and the Scream director's cut vhs port) |

oh and is Dawn of the Dead worth picking up?
Anybody know any lists of sought after laserdiscs? I know Return of the Living Dead is pretty pricey because of the soundtrack issue... |

I'd also recommend the Elite special edition of Night of the Living Dead, as it has several HUNDRED stills that never got ported over to the DVD.

Awesome! Thanks Paff. I'll definably look into Night. It seems a lot of quantity was left out of dvd extras from ld to dvd (much like the transition from dvd to blu). I never did pick up the Jaws 30th dvd (I heard that dvd finally has the full 2 hour documentary from the ld, mine only has the seventy-five minute version).

Just got this in the mail:
Don't expect it to look as good as any of the newer DVDs, but I am interested to see how it's framed. |

Just got Night of the Creeps, Return of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street SE, Parents and Taxi Driver Criterion, although I don't think mine has the commentary.

Bought my first couple of LDs in a while the other day in Salvation Army of all places: WHEN TIME EXPIRES and TC-2000. Pure Sci-Fi cheese at 99 cents each. I've probably sold about 350+ LDs in the last couple of years and only bought half a handful at most. The poor LDs aren't holding up well on a 106" screen.
