The Story

In 1992, work began on a fourth Sleepaway Camp movie titled Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor. Principal filming began in upstate New York with Jim Markovic directing. Carrie Chambers, John Lodico and Victor Campos were cast in the lead roles. During filming the project was abandoned and never completed. As a special promotion, Best Buy is including an exclusive fourth bonus disc in all of their Sleepaway Camp Survival Kits. That fourth disc contains 30 minutes of rough footage from Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor.

I'm not going to go over all the scenes in detail; that would spoil the disc for many people. Just about every scene has Carrie Chambers in it. She's either interacting with someone, running through the woods, screaming, or just lounging out in the sun. There are no gore shots, unfortunately. The footage itself is mildly interesting. Many of the shots are just several takes of the same scene. This disc certainly wouldn't have repeat value for me, though I'm sure die-hard Sleepaway Camp fans are eagerly anticipating it. Regular horror fans will probably want this Best Buy set either way for its rarity value. Considering this fourth disc is only available at Best Buy, and the Survivor Kit itself is limited, I'm certain all of the Best Buy sets are bound to be collector items.

Image Quality

This movie was never completed and thus never shown theatrically, so I wasn't expecting much from the transfer. This is just rough footage after all. The footage is shown full frame 1.33:1. The image is soft, lacking in detail, and contains dull colors. On the plus side, there's really no grain or print damage to speak of.

Dolby Mono sound is included. There is no soundtrack, just dialogue. There is some background hissing and several of the scenes contain no sound at all. Dialogue scenes are clearly audible.

Supplemental Material

inline Image The whole disc is a supplement, really. However, there is a trailer included for Sleepaway Camp IV. It runs at 3 minutes 15 seconds. It's mostly footage from other Sleepaway Camp films intercut with some of the footage from Sleepaway Camp IV.

Final Thoughts

The footage on this disc doesn't have much, if any, replay value for anyone except die-hard Sleepaway Camp fans. Considering this Best Buy set has an exclusive fourth bonus disc and the same MSRP found at other stores which don't have the fourth disc, most fans will opt for the Best Buy set. Its rarity value alone makes it a no-brainer. The quality is far below Anchor Bay's normal offerings, but what can you expect from a free disc containing rough footage to an uncompleted movie?
