I´m desensitized for usual lame violence like Friday 13th remake. But if movie puts violence/gore in correct way, usually in connection with something I have to think about or feel with character, then it works. Great example of this is The Fly (Cronenberg´s) - Goldblum´s metamorphosis into degenerated mutant with falling-off teeth, nails and body parts. He is basically ill there and we watch his path to doom, it makes the scenes sick in correct way. Or another example - (again Cronenberg´s) Eastern Promises - fight scene in sauna, again powerful one, because it´s not typical lame "showcase" violence from Friday or Halloween remakes.

I barely even blink an eye when there's extreme violence on film or in video, but the slightest bit of blood in real life and I get a bit squeamish.

Come to think of it I've been writing a short webseries, and it's been about sex, violence, kidnappings and attempted murder. I've been getting really great feedback about how thrilling, "intense" and mysterious it all is. People NEED to know what happens next it's so suspenseful. I'm like... "but did you laugh? It's a comedy..."

I write this stuff thinking it's funny as hell, apparently others don't quite think so. Some people take violence far too seriously. :D Whatever happened to the 60's Batman where they would get tied up in a giant coffee cup with acid about to pour down from a kettle? Kids need to see more improbable pending doom these days, not less damn it.

Speaking of Hostel: Part 2 and its' pathetic campaign to freak viewers out with brainless, cheap shocks... If the director doesn't know how to put intelligence into the film, how can we see the film as disturbing?

Some films are shocking because they have substances. But in this current climate of horror- some films aren't worth considering: are they making us desenstized? It's impossible not to be a little desensitized when for years now, pretty much everything called horror consisted of torture and lame exploitation-wannabes trying to recapture the grittiness of the 70's.

I'm more interested in, if we are desensitized - what do we do next? Watch a lot of children's films? Hanna Montana and iCarly? I should think that would make viewers more violent than the violent films dull our reactions to violence...

And what about- our feelings on victims? Not just of violence, but other crimes too. Do we have a different opinion on the whole of human misery because we could see worse now?

Even if you see the most violent shit ever released in media, it's completely different when you're exposed to a real violent scene in life with guns, knives, dead people, or kidnapped by a psycho or terrorist. Totally different all the way! The real fear will show up no matter how desensitized you are. That's not at the other side of the screen.

Thanks to nasty porn I've been desensitized of anything gross for as long as I can remember. When that 2 Girls 1 Cup video was making its rounds on the internet I just watched it said "so? I've seen much worse than this plenty of times". Granted, if it were real gore or something like the scat I just mentioned and I was there in person, it might be a different story but on video, little affects me.

many movies that would disgust other people, i can laugh with

i have a couple of friends who have about the same mindset, so yeah, maybe we're getting desensitized

but everytime again when i watch an animal getting killed on screen, it hits me, and i remember seeing 2 men fighting each other at a party and i tried to get away from it as soon as possible, so the desensitation is only for FAKE violence

    Yes.

An attitude can desensitize people as much as an image. An image is oftentimes taken out of any context. But, when you see racists or homophobes on TV spouting hate- that's just as bad or worse. It doesn't take a suggestion of violence to make people think about committing a violent act. (Since that's the leap everyone makes in their mind, from seeing it to doing it)

Words heard can sometimes speak louder than anything seen. The media and some so-called entertainment outlets have a lot to do with that.

On the sexual side of things, I would have to say that I have become desensitized. Or at least sufficiently jaded. I had a similar reaction when 2G1C started floating around. (but i do love the 2G1C reaction videos) I still can't handle seeing sex and violence mixed. Rape scenes (of any amount of explicitness) still turn my stomach. But, things like coprophagy and bestiality rarely affect me any more. I blame Goatse.
