i was thinking about mine today at work and i'd like to hear your thoughts...mine is leatherface jumping out from the darkness of K-OKLA's record room in texas chainsaw 2...saw it in 35mm at a midnight movie show last year and the audience shit themselves...

Dead & Buried: When the supposed dead burn victim suddenly screams.

I remember watching it in my mid 20's - I was startled so badly that I screamed an A natural above soprano high C (I checked the piano), which is pretty high considering that I am a dude.

No joke, when I first read the title thread, I was thinking the same scene.

It's a very effective scene. That scene in the The Exorcist III is pretty good too. The one with the nurse leaving the room, down the hall shot.

Another one that got me good was during the "blood testing" scene in The Thing (1982)

I agree with you. Jump scares almost never work on me; one of the only exceptions is the aforementioned scene in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another jump scare that's anywhere near as effective. I don't know why it works so well, but it was expertly done.

I have to go with the cat jumping in through the window in Friday the 13th Part 2, right before Alice gets stabbed in the head with a Ice Pick. I screamed, my mother screamed, and so did at least half of the audience when we saw it when it was originally at the movie theater in 1981.

^This. One of the biggest jump scares I have ever seen in a film. It is set up flawlessly to make you need a clean pair of underwear. It helps that the rest of the film is quite excellent too with the exception of the studio forced ending.

Exorcist III for me too, as a kid though the severed head in JAWS messed me up pretty good.

It's an oldie, but the "bus scene" jump scare in Cat People (1942) is still very effective and a great example of how to use the tactic well.

;) Well, in Denmark, Kim is a male name. And you've probably already guessed that that avatar isn't me.

the exorcist III scare was the capper for an awesome night of pizza, nintendo and horror way back in the good old days...my friend tim said "you gotta see this scene, man. you'll be thinking about it for days!" we start watching it, then comes the hallway, and he leaves the room, saying something like "yeah, you guys can have that!"...after that, the trip down the hallway had my ass chewing a hole in the couch...

LOL That's a very funny cool story! Magic like that doesn't happen anymore. Movies being made these days are so lame.

One Missed Call (the Japanese original). There's a scene late in the movie, where they use the lame fake-out of birds suddenly flying away. But it was the ONLY time in the movie the surrounds came on, and it was especially loud in the surrounds. It definitely got an audible reaction from me.
