Must-Have DVDs

Discussion in 'General' started by Livingdead102, Mar 27, 2004.

  1. I enjoy collecting and watching movies, but I guess you could say I'm generally a bit obscure with my selections. When I buy DVDs I tend to look for the strangest, most unusual, or otherwise uncommon releases to pick up; virtually all of my friends also collect movies, and it gives me a great sense of pride to show a film to someone that they have never even heard of, let alone picked up, and have them enjoy something they wouldn't otherwise have experienced had I, with my great vault of horrific cinema knowledge, not deemed it suitable to expose them to. Aside from showing how full of shit I generally am, this also presents a problem in that I tend to overlook normal releases for the weird or uncommon stuff most people haven't heard of or haven't picked up. Basically, I've got some decent obscurities in my collection, but am running pretty light on the basic fundamentals of horror cinema.

What I need from you guys is this: Give me a list of must have horror dvds to help me round out the foundation of my collection. All the basics, the obvious stuff a pseudo-snob like me might have overlooked, all the films that without which your collection would be incomplete. Nevermind how obvious they might seem, please include them (for example, only after watching the recent Day of the Dead release and wanting to watch the whole series back to back did I realize I never picked up NotLD). If there are multiple releases of a film *ahem*Halloween*ahem* feel free to include which release you prefer.

By the way, I did a few searches on essential or must-have dvds and didn't come up with quite what I was looking for, so if this topic seems WAY overdone, I apologize; I did try. Maybe a neat feature of the site would be a link featuring list of a few dozen essential dvd releases for the average consumer? Thanks all.

Get a region free player! There are so many awesome discs in R2 land, including a great version of Henry POASK, a beefed up Dog Soilders, and the essential Predator 2 disc SE. I'll add the R2 Anchor Bay Alligator disc to the list as well. Both Alligator films in DTS along with commentary and shit on the first one. I can't think of any reason why AB hasn't even annouced these for R1, but they haven't!

Well, as with everyone else, most of my selections have been listed here, but to utterly convince you, I shall list again!

 Nightmare on Elm Street Collection - I am so glad I bought this. The bonus disc is worth the price alone, but a damn fine way to get all the Freddy you can muster.
 NOTLD (Millennium Edition) - 5 words: Night of the Living Bread
 Dawn of the Dead (Divimax - although the multi-disc set in September may be the one set to rule them all)
 Halloween (Divimax 2-disc) - my personal favourite movie.
Ginger Snaps (Canadian Edition - loaded with exclusive features)
 Evil Dead - Elite; Evil Dead 2 SE and Army of Darkness (whatever the current equivalent of the LE it the Boomstick? I've lost track...). If you are region free, go for the Uk box set. ED is not the original full frame, but the exclusive bonus disc DOES include the original full-frame version as well as features not found anywhere else. So the best of both worlds really.
   Silent Night, Deadly Night - Santa. Rape. Violence. Nuns. More violence. Punish. 'Nuff said. First two films are on the DVD set.
 Wicker Man - Not strictly horror, but a damn creepy masterpiece. The US version has a groovy box, but the R2 and R4 versions have a commentary with Christopher Lee!
    Re-Animator - 2 disc SE (Millennium).
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1973) - I have the R4 version with the feature length documentary 'The Shocking Truth'. Some reviews really get stuck into the transfer on the actual film, but from the comparitive shots I've seen between releases, you'd have to be the most anal person in the world to care. Looks fine to me.

Ones I don't have that look cool:
Tox Box - collection of Toxic Avenger movies

  16. Sorry to take so long to respond, but I've been working way too damn much lately (which is nice, what with all the new music gear, dvds, and beer, but still...). Anyway, I think my next order right now is going to be NotLD ME and I Spit On Your Grave ME (just to keep my ReAnimator ME company--by the way, anyone know if any more Millenium Edition sets are on the way?), Nekromantik, Schramm, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London. Now that I think about it I guess I wasn't so bad off after all--about half of the common suggestions were in my collection already. I guess I should have known this crowd would think of Suspiria, the Beyond, Irreversible, etc. as fundamentals (not that I'm complaining  ). Thanks for all your input.
