It' sort of like what would happen if Edward D. Wood Jr. or Al Adamson made a movie, but had an extraordinarily talented makeup effects guy.

    It's really that bad?
Is it just badly paced? What are the main problems? Does it have any redeeming qualities even for the cheese factor alone? or is is completely unwatchable?
The effects make it seem like a minor classic.

I'm a fan, but you have to either appreciate unintentional comedy or turn your brain off. Rick Baker's effects are really the only thing about the movie that could be considered legitimately good. Everything else is Z-Grade material.

Just to rattle off a couple problems, and attempting to stay spoiler-free:

    • A monster concept that sounds cool in theory, but maybe not so much in practice.
    • Characters that have their priorities ridiculously out of order.
    • Plotholes galore.
    • Slow motion where there probably shouldn't be slow motion.

I hate slow motion with a passion especially when used in films like these, the other stuff is not a deal breaker though for me. I think years of watching The Six Million Dollar Man did me in for slo mo.
    Thanks for the info.

I watched it last week and I actually thought it wasn't bad at all starting about halfway through. The first half has some really bad stuff; the cracker rant, Dr. Ted Nelson and the black guy trying to have a conversation on a super loud moving platform, Alex Rebar's "rings of Saturn line" - just lots of stupidity all around. I think once the movie stopped being as goofy and took on a little more serious tone it wasn't nearly as terrible as its reputation would lead one to believe. Sure, the last half still had some bad writing and acting, but I thought it was actually pretty exciting and entertaining.

THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN actually reminds me of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. They both are about guys named Steve (I was going to say "astronauts," but I guess maybe Steve Austin was a test pilot?) and the music in both is similar.

Yeah dickieduvet thats where it came from. I thought the film was bad but the effects were fun even if there is'nt really any gore in it.

Ha ha, No worries Marv. I'll get it ordered this week :)

I've loved it since seeing it on late night TV back in the mid-eighties when I was about 10.

Nostalgia factor plays a big part in my affection for it, It'll be spun many a time in my gaff

For some reason this makes the film even more endearing to me now, I'm gonna have to check it out.
    Thanks!!

You can watch it on youtube in its entirety and then decide if you want to spring for the Blu-Ray release also.
I don't have the time to watch the whole thing, but what I saw was hilarious.

Perfect assessment. Love the effects but I'm not sure I want to re-watch this one.
