Stephen King's short story from Skeleton Crew being made into a movie by Frank Darabont... interview here about the new Green Mile DVD but they go into a bit on The Mist... can't wait... one of my fav King short stories and I hope they keep it as close as possible to the source material too... it reads like a movie that short story anyhow. :)

Originally the story was in Kirby McCauley's "Dark Forces". Fans of short horror fiction would do well to track down this old gem, I've never read a better anthology, and I've read quite a few.

Love the story. I'm not so sure of how well it's going to translate into film. I mean, there's some stuff in it that could end up looking awfully silly in a movie ... But Darabont and silly don't really match, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :)

Giant crab claws spring immediately to mind--and I haven't read the book since about 1986. Wait a second, that's like 20 YEARS AGO!!! I'm old.

This is the one I've been waiting for!! It's about time they're doing it. Great damn story! I've always thought this would make an excellent movie.

I used to have this as 3-D audio play (not a book on tape it was acted out) that we listened to in the family car on long road trips. It was pretty cinematic

Wow...that's where I first read it too. I remember it was the last story in the collection. I was "saving" it for last....got about halfway through the other stories, then couldn't wait any longer and jumped to The Mist.

I suppose I should track down the book and read the rest of the stories.

"Children of the Kingdom" by T. E. D. Klein and "Where the Summer Ends" by Karl Edward Wagner still stick in my head, over 20 years after reading them (you'll never look at kudzu the same way again after the second story, and you'll give sewer grates a wide berth after reading the first). Can't say they were the best stories of the lot, as its been a long time to make such judgements, but they definitely (along with "The Mist") had the most lasting impact.

Oddly enough, after reading "The Mist" I've been unable to look at any spider with flashy markings without remembering that line "racing stripes".

I do remember that one, but as a pre-teen in the Northeast, I remember being puzzled because I had no idea what the hell "kudzu" was. Actually, I still don't...

After I read the story... I loathed seeing moths on the window at night... the underside of those things... magnified to the size of those "things" in that story that clung to the supermarket's windows at night... creeps me the fuck out... yuck. :) (I guess a moth was the closest thing in my head to what those things looked like... what with the wings and all)

Didn't know myself, until I heard the stories from various folks. Think standard variety garden vine, then imagine it turned into an unstoppable, ever growing monster from a 60's B horror movie.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kudzu

I've seen jokes about using large concrete bricks as mulch for kudzu sprouts (the adversity will just make it put that much more effort into growing), that cows in the south love kudzu but not as much as kudzu loves the south, and how planting kudzu in your backyard is grounds for justifiable homicide by your neighbors.

You didn't have to deal with it, because of all the things kudzu loves, a freezing winter isn't one of them.

Wagner's story was an interesting "what makes kudzu grow so well" explaination.

Ohhhhh yeah! And they were yellow right? Hmmm... also, from what I've been gathering from reading about this...
the spiders haven't been spinning there acidic webbing :( and wrapping around hapless individuals and burning into them... like I believe it was Dan in the book gets his neck wrapped by one and his head kinda plops off
    Hmmm...

That spider looks disgusting. I hope it's not CGI. And if it is, then I hope it at least looks less CGI than the spiders in Eight Legged Freaks. I want this film to be groooooss!
