www.dvdanswers.com reports sony is releasing this on dvd sept 27th although no special features have been announced yet

 

Saw this one last night. It started out pretty good. It even had me thinking "I'm going to have to guy this when it comes out" at one point, but then it went caca.

First off, George Lutz trying to kill his family. That wasn't true to the account of the events and it rips off the Shining to boot. Also, the 'room' under the stairs. WTF? In real life it's like a cubby hole painted red. Here we have a tunnel with torture cells - terrible idea. Ruined what could have been... And to think, I was willing to forgive the porn-star babysitter. Tsk, tsk...

On a brighter note, Ryan Reynolds was great

 

DVD Answers - Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment has released early details on The Amityville Horror which stars Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Jesse James and Jimmy Bennett. The film tells the story of a family, terrorized by demonic forces after moving into a home that was the site of a grisly mass-murder. The disc will be available to own from the 4th October, and should set you back around $28.95 in total. The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Extras will include an audio commentary with Ryan Reynolds and the producers, some deleted scenes, a Supernatural Homicide featurette, a making of featurette, a multi-angle 'on set' feature and a gallery.

 

Okay, I wasn't going to buy it anyways, but upon looking at that cover, I've decided that I've had enough. From now on I'm going to boycott any DVD release that has a generic "floating faces" cover. If the studios want my money, then they're gonna have to work a little harder at being creative with poster and cover art.

 

Exactly. Maybe they should have showcased the house a little more. I mean, to me, the house is an icon...IT'S the reason that people should be excited to see the film, no?

 

The cover's not very good, but what can you do? I will likely get it anyway when the price drops. I liked Ryan Reynolds I mean the movie enough to watch him I mean the movie again. Plus, he is funny on commentaries.

 

I imagine they emphasized the faces so renters would be able to tell this apart from the original. The original is all house, and I know there are plenty of people at my video store who pick it up thinking it is the Reynolds one. Not to defend it or anything, beause it still looks like shyte, but I'd imagine that is one of the main motives behind it. I wasn't all that pleased with the poster art in the first place though, so it isn't a real loss.

 

I probably won't be buying this anyway. It just wasn't good enough for me to pay over $20 for. Maybe if I see it in the cheapie bins some day, for like $10, I might pick it up.

 

I caught up with this on Friday since my sister rented it and I was over at her place anyways. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed it. It definitely had it's flaws, some of which were even somewhat appealing to me (like adding a new character at the hour point). It was a lot better than I expected and I had even expected it to be pretty decent. I'd even go so far as saying it was good. There I said it... "it was good." I don't think I'll be buying it anytime soon however, 'cuz I don't think it'll get a whole lot of replay value from me.
Worth a rental (even though I didn't have to) and I wouldn't have felt bad about paying the $8 admission price either.

 

Not read this entire thread... but for what it's worth.....

I've watched both the original and the remake over two days. This remake trumps the original film in just about every way. I missed Kidder though. It's much tighter (by 25 minutes or so!), and tells the same story. The original is slow, dull, and flat.

The basic story here isn't exactly deep, so you've simply got to go with the Haunted House/Possessed theme. As such, this one was simply more entertaining that the soul sucking original. A very worthy remake.

 

Watched this for the first time in, well, probably 15 years. I thought it holds up real well. It's all possible I'm saying that because I watched it after Amityville: It's About Time.

 

I think it's one of the better remakes of the last 20 years. It's certainly no modern classic or anything... but I think anyone watching it would at least say it's a decent horror film for the time. There are certainly a ton of remakes out there that are far worse and less original than this one turned out to be.

I originally saw it at the theater, and have watched it at least a few times since then and still think it holds up quite well. I still prefer the original film of course, but this one is different enough to enjoy it based on its own merits.

 

Yeah, I usually watch the 2005 movie, together with the original and part 2.
Can't believe it's already been 15 (!!) years, since I saw it in the theater.

 

I think the remake is way better than the original. One of the best remakes ever.

 

It sure is, but I have a lot of nostalgia for the original, since it was one of the first horror movies I ever saw as a kid.

 

It's funny to go back and read the thread from the beginning. LOTS of complaining and hatred for the movie, mostly from some now long gone members
