As a follow up to the conversation between Matt and I on the "The Haunting in Connecticut" thread. I would like to see once an for all what this board thinks of this term. Is it a condescending term that we should never use? or should we embrace it?

Haha, you beat me to it! I was totally thinking about doing a poll like this :D

Let the debate begin, I say!

Personally, I don't think it is condescending. And even if it were, the majority of the films that belong to this particular subgenre are so awful to begin with, that I'm perfectly okay with condescending them.

"I don't mind it," and until there is a better name that isn't overcompensating, I'll continue to classify the subgenre as such.

I think it is the constant misuse of the term that makes it irritating. I own a couple of the AugU films, yet haven't sat through even one of them yet in full. I am not against them, but clearly, I have a fine line as to what kind of violence entertains me and what doesn't. I would not even pretend it is based on morals or ethics. It doesn't matter that it exists to me as I do own a couple myself. And when I am in the rare mood, I will surely love them, but I just can't force the vibe. I just don't like to see films that I really like to be thrown in the same category as films that, imo, are not as high in calibre, even if they do have a place. If that makes any sense.

I also know that my gf hated it when someone labelled Martyrs as torture porn. So she would probably vote the same way if she still frequented this site.

  5. I voted I hate it cause I do. To me there is no such sub-genre. There is hard R0rated stuff and just plain brutal Horror; that is it for me. Besides, not all of these have torture set pieces, so I find it meaningless and misleading myself, but to each they're own if you have reasons for liking it or dis-liking it. *shrugs*

I don't mind it, but I understand why you do Ash. I can't believe how someone could dislike Devil's Rejects, writing it off as "torture porn", and still call themselves a horror fan. It's frustrating.

I'm a cross between the last two. I don't mind the term, but I think with films such as Hostel, the term fits perfectly.

But hey, all in good fun Ash. All in good fun. :D

Don't mind it, but agree some movies do get mislabeled with it. I think it definitely is fit for others though.

I hate it, but not because it's condescending. I just think "torture porn" sounds rather stupid.

I've hated the term since the first time hearing it a few years ago, mostly because it is false.

    There is no fucking porn!

Did someone coin that term because they think that those who watch these movies jerk-off to people getting tortured? I love most of the films that have been labeled T.P., but have never stroked to any of them, not even one good nude scene.

Shorten it to Torture or get creative, but T.P. doesn't fit, gives false impressions, and sounds dumb all at once.

    Don't care.

I believe "slasher" started out as a negative term used by anti-horror critics, so this is really no different.

    Amen to that!

I mean, what happens if you pick up the latest Granny Porn feature and get home to find it's just scenes of grannies being grannies: refilling bowls of hard candy, going to catch a meal at Old Country Buffet, complaining that their feet hurt, etc.? You surely can't be expected to jerk off to that. False advertising!

I don't mind it, every time I hear the term I think of the phrase "the pornography of violence" which I believe I first read in an article about the movie Blood Feast. I take this phrase to mean that the movie was intended to satisfy someones urge for violence just as a porn was intended to satisfy someones urge for sex. Torture porn is pretty much the same term just applied specifically to torture so it fits imo.

I loved it when John Carpenter got called a "pornographer of gore" for The Thing, and as I understand it he didn't it mind it either. It refers more to the explict nature of the content then meaning that it causes sexual arousal.

So yes I love the term. The only real problem I have with it is that it's used too broadly. Just because something has extreme violence or a scene of torture doesn't mean the whole thing is torture porn.

I really am not a fan of the term, and I think that it's kinda ridiculous. Like i read someone else say that there is no actual pornography in any of these films.

I work at a porn store, so you could say i know a little bit about porn, and i'm sorry i just can't find myself to call a girl tied to a chair with her breasts hanging out "porn". I just call them "BTK" (Bind, Torture, Kill) films. I know that what i've come up with really doesn't touch on the copious amounts of nudity, but i just like "BTK" name better. I just think it fits a little bit more, because i think Bind, Torture, Kill really sums up the films alot better then "Torture Porn".

The main reason why it's a derogatory term, is because it insinuates horror fans are a group of people sitting in a dark room by themselves enjoying watching people get tortured. This causes some idiots to make the leap that we must also enjoy watching people get tortured in real life. Which just added to their theory that horror fans are sickos that are a step away from being serial killers.
